An Australian Sing-Along

Today we met with another potential 2014 bride who was a bridesmaid in Lindsay and Shaun's wedding which took place last fall at the Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club in Virginia Beach - "the Australian wedding" as it is lovingly known among the members of the Emily Weddings Team.

Having never experienced a guest list made up primarily of Australians, we could've never expected the fun that was in store for the night of Lindsay and Shaun's wedding. I guess when you fly all the way across the world for a 6-hour event, you tend to take it all the way and make it worth your while. We can't even begin to explain our surprise when a certain song came on and all of the Australian men linked arms in a circle on the dance floor then immediately dropped their drawers revealing a rainbow of multi-colored and patterned men's underwear. Woah.

There may or may not have been photos taken during that performance; however, we'll keep it clean on the blog and share this one instead. The photo below shows the scene at the end of the night. Dinner was served, cake was eaten, drinks were poured, more drinks were poured, and these guests - a healthy mix of American fun and Australian rowdy - had the most amazing sing along we have ever witnessed.

Thanks go to Lindsay, Shaun, and their guests for reminding us that even when the music stops the party doesn't have to.

Love in Watercolor: A New design concept

We've seen the ever popular themes and design concepts come, go and some reinvented. Finally we can say we've found a new design idea that's fresh, inviting and makes us just a little more anxious for Spring!!

Most of us are familiar with watercolors when it comes to art or the nostalgic "paint-by-numbers" masterpieces that graced our parents refrigerators. Who would have thought that such an inspirational and influential color palette could grace the elegant tables and reception decor of today's brides? Bring the beauty of art into your wedding decor and let your guests be inspired by it's unforgettable design.

DIY Friday!!: Doily Chandelier

TGIF!! And we have another crafty but gorgeous DIY project for all of you "go-getter" brides out there! Are you planning a stylish and romantic wedding with whimsical DIY touches? Today's DIY project comes to us courtesy of Martha Stewart Weddings. We absolutely love this chandelier! Made from paper doilies, this creative centerpiece truly stands on its own. It's simplistic, eye-catching, but chic.
Here's the low-down on this amazing DIY centerpiece:

via Martha Stewart Weddings

Paper doilies can add high drama (without the schmaltz) and stylish elegance (without the stuffiness) to your reception tables.
Create this chandelier with a waterfall of ruffles out of doilies for a visual high. Make garlands, and tie to a large and a small wreath form. Hang with ribbon, placing the smaller ring lower than the larger. (Use pushpins or adhesive hooks to secure to ceiling.) 24- and 12-inch doublerail wreath rings, Maine Wreath Co.

1. Fold 4-inch doilies in half twice. Open them, and scrunch them up a little at the center to give them the ruffled appearance of flowers.

2. Thread flowers onto yarn to make strands 12 to 16 inches long, and tie to wreath. Attach extra flowers to wire with double-sided tape to fill in gaps.

When One Dress Just Won't Do: Bridal Reception Dresses

www.affairswithelegance.com

Change is constant. One of the beauties of the wedding industry is the ever changing trends and styles. These changes are giving new brides the freedom of true personalization and a plethora of design options that far exceeds what existed in the previous generations. More and more, brides are finding new ways to make their special day a little more memorable or unique. One new trend we are noticing is that brides are choosing to change out of there wedding gown and into something more chic and fun for the reception.

We love this idea! Your wedding dress is such a staple on the big day but not all brides want to spend top dollar on an elaborate, unforgettable gown that they'll want out of all night. Choosing to cut back in price on your wedding gown and opting for a more simplistic design gives you the financial freedom to purchase a 2nd flirty, fun gown with the money you've saved! Wedding gowns are more prone to stains and damage during the reception, with all the dancing, food and drink. Most brides consider this and by having a second dress, avoid the chance of staining or ruining their bridal gown. Designers such as Priscilla of Boston actually boast an entire collection of wedding gowns and reception dresses to be paired together for your big day. You'll notice most bridal salons are recognizing this growing trend and will offer a wider variety of flirty, cocktail-styled dresses. Personally, we love the dress pictured! It's the best of both worlds! A convertible bridal gown! Simply remove the bottom half and train of the dress to reveal a flirty, but still classy cocktail dress!

You can find more convertible dress options here too!

It all comes down to preference and priority. If you've always envisioned a killer gown that's sure to turn heads, you may just want to relish every moment in that very dress. But if you'd rather get your dancing shoes on and party all night long, choosing to purchase a 2nd comfortable reception dress or a convertible gown might just be in your best interest. We love all the new cute, flirty designs that are out now. Designers like Jessica McClintock have a wonderful selection of dresses for decent prices with a variety of color palettes as well!

**Are you planning on changing for your reception? What do you think about the convertible gowns? Let us hear all about it!

Spice up your Escort Cards!

Some of you may be in this very position..you have a rather extensive guest list, families who may never have met before and a void in the "escort card" department. If you're nodding in approval at all three, then you're reading the right blog today! Today's post is all about escort cards and creative alternatives to the "card" factor.

Martha Stewart Weddings
While reading away in Blog Land this week, we couldn't help but notice the personal wedding photos of a certain blogger. The author and editor of Snippet and Ink recently shared her wedding photos on her blog for all to see and be inspired. And were we ever! One of the details that stood out most to us were the adorable escort buttons! Yes, I said "buttons!" Each button was hand calligraphed with the individuals name and attached to a card which featured their table number. It gets better! The pins were then displayed on a vintage post card holder! The pictures really explain it all and capture the creative thought put into this unforgettable detail.

The buttons were a hit at the wedding and everyone wore them! It truly set the tone for a fun reception, and that's what is most important. It's true, the right crowd will really help these buttons be a hit, but we have confidence in your wedding guests. Even better, these nifty little buttons will help your family remember the names of their newly acquired family = ) Everyone is sure to know who each person is by the end of the night.

How much do you love this creative alternative to escort cards? Think this would be a huge success at your wedding? We want to hear all about it!

Ultimate Showdown!: Cupcakes vs. Wedding Cakes

Cupcakes! We've all seen the specialty "cupcakeries" and the endless shows on TV, but just what is the new obsession with cupcakes all about? Cupcakes have been around for a long time, and most of us remember eating them as kids or making a mess in the kitchen as we decorated them. Cupcakes have wiggled their way into the limelight of the wedding industry, and we couldn't be more fond of this sweet treat!

Cupcakes have recently become the new alternative to traditional wedding cakes for many brides and grooms. And with the seemingly endless options for decorations and flavors, there is plenty of room for customization. Much like wedding cakes, whose canvas for design is always being taken to new heights, these decadent desserts are making their statement at a front table.

So which is the better option? We're breaking down both based on style and affordability in this week's showdown!

STYLE

There truly is something so whimsical and fun about cupcakes. You can't escape it! It's a staple from many of our childhood memories. If your wedding reception's sole theme is fun and carefree, then cupcakes are the perfect addition. On the other hand, if your wedding is a bit more formal and traditional, cupcakes might look a bit cheap and understated next to the traditional grand wedding cake. Both can be decorated to suit your wedding's theme and feel. So who wins in the style category?
Cupcakes: If fun and a carefree attitude is important to have at your wedding, cupcakes are the way to go!
Wedding cake: If your wedding is to be a grand affair, a wedding cake might be more appropriate. Let's not forget the symbolic importance of the wedding cake. The last thing you want to do is lose sight of your beautiful cake at the reception because it's either non-existent or just doesn't stand out.

COST

When cupcakes were first introduced to the wedding industry, they were the cheaper more cost efficient alternative to the traditional grand wedding cake. It was soon apparent that bakers would have to put just as much work into cupcakes, if not more work, as a regular cake! Each one has to be iced and decorated and sometimes cupcake stands need to be purchased, as most bakers will only have cake stands.
On the other hand, it is easier for a non-professional baker to make cupcakes than an elaborate 8-tiered masterpiece. The simplicity alone will save you money. There are other variables that add to the cost of cupcakes however:
www.cakepicturegallery.com
WINNER: In the end, choosing to do memorable and extravagant cupcakes might cost you just as much as an unforgettable wedding cake. You'll just need to decide which is the better fit for your reception theme.

** Are you thinking about using cupcakes for your reception instead of a traditional wedding cake? We want to hear the details!! = )

DIY Friday!!: Photobooths

TGIF! In honor of this wonderful day of the week, we're giving you an incredible DIY project that's sure to be the talk of your wedding. We've all seen photo booths...in the malls, at carnivals, but photo booths have become a fun activity for guests to enjoy while attending your wedding. And they've definitely come a long way from red velvet curtains and about a 3x3 space!

Photo booths have definitely evolved, and now some photographers are offering them as an added service!
What exactly are these "new and improved" photo booths all about? We'll let the pictures do all the talking...

How incredible are these photos!? And how amazing would it be to have these fun photos of your wedding guests? Now, you're probably wondering how do I get an incredible backdrop for a fun photo booth!? Hold on to your seats ladies..you just might be trying out your skills in carpentry (or just ask your wonderful fiancee for help!)

  •     By using either plywood or an actual piece of drywall (which would probably work better), you're going to literally fashion it to look like you plucked it from your own home. Wallpaper, woodwork, however you'd like it to look. I personally love the damask wallpaper used in one of the photos. It makes the backdrop really pop!

prettylittleweddings.com

  • You can use flea market picture frames to line the walls. I'd suggest placing the frames where you'd like them before cutting holes into your drywall.

  •  Be sure to include support beams for your backdrop!

**After you've successfully built your photo booth backdrop, don't forget the props! Props are a fun way to lighten up anyone's mood while taking pictures in your photo booth. Encourage guests to use them and enjoy the results!
